Feature Packed Operating System From Microsoft

Feature Packed Operating System From Microsoft

Windows 7 is designed and developed by the world renowned software giant Microsoft as an operating system with an easy to use interface. Many operating systems have been combined to create Windows 7. This highly successful software was launched on 22nd July, 2009 and since then has topped the popularity charts among the computer users across the world. The Windows 7 runs on a range of computers that includes desktops, laptops as well as tablet PCs. Hardware Requirements for installing Windows 7 are as follows. The 32 bit version of Windows 7 has hardware requirements similar to the highly hyped edition of Windows Vista; however the 64 bit version of Windows 7 requires a more robust support from the hardware.
Windows 7 comes with many added features such as listed here. An important feature is its ability to recognize touch and handwriting of the user. It has a strong virtual hard disk support that accounts for space storage of vital data. The Windows 7 comes with enhanced performance of its multi-core processors thereby increasing real time processes. The Windows 7 also displays an improved functionality in booting performance and other functions such as Direct Access, and kernel improvisations. Windows 7 unilaterally supports hardware that has a combination of many different graphics cards sourced from different sellers. The Windows media center in its latest avatar can be found as a part of Windows 7 that is a treat for multimedia enthusiasts.
Windows 7 now boasts of a very special calculator that can perform high-end operations related to programming and statistics as well as do the conversions for all units of measurements. The control panel of Windows 7 is the icing on the cake with a host of never-seen before features in any operating system. The prominent among them are the Clear Type Text Turner, Biometric Devices, Gadgets, Recovery, Credential Manager, Troubleshooting, Workspace Center, Location chips with Sensors, System Icons, Display and Display Color Calibration Wizard.
The Windows Security Center is now known as the Windows Action Center that is entrusted with both security and maintenance operations. A staggering 256 Gigabytes of additional memory is held in place and nurtured by Ready boost for the Windows 7 32 bit version. The Windows 7 also supports RAW image format images through its decoders that are enabled by Windows Imaging Component. This feature allows previewing of thumbnails of these images and their Meta data display in Windows Explorer. Additionally, it also aids in full-size viewing and easy building of slide-shows with the help of Windows Photo Viewer and Windows Media Center.
Let's now move to other interface features of Windows 7. The Quick Launch toolbar that was earlier a part of Windows 7 task bar has been replaced with a plug-in that can add more applications to the bar. The task bar can now be easily customized as per the user's convenience. Further, the task buttons now contain all the buttons for additional applications. With these applications at hand, the user can make use of the Jump Lists feature and gain a smooth access to the oft-used tasks. The problem of lagging in Windows 7 can be fixed by using system optimizer that has a well developed array of registry cleaner, system cleaner, services optimizer, and registry defrag to name a few.

About HP Elitebook 8460p

About HP Elitebook 8460p

We all know that the competition among manufactures in the laptop market is more and more fierce. Hardware configuration is just one of the most important factors that affect the popularity of the laptop. The appearance and the experience of control also play an important part in laptop. All these outer and inner factors have an influence on the laptop. So change is essential, especially the change of Notebook.
If you know HP Elitebook, you know the change it made before. And here, comparing with the former Elitebook series, the Elitebook of new generation EliteBook 8460p changes more. The body, which is based on the metal frame, is made by MIL-STD-810G with military level standard. This provides more solid protection. Its resistance to pressure is almost the same as thinkpad. Comparing 8440p, the appearance of 8460p is more exquisite with the material of aluminium magnesium alloy and frame of HP DuraCase.
Actually the biggest change the 8460p makes is the keyboard. We all know that the Elitebook series adopt three-area design for keyboard. That is the top part, the whole keyboard and Palmrest and touch pad. And the new Elitebook 8460p uses the popular integrated design instead of the usual Elitebook one.
In addition, the design of heat dissipation is different from most Notebooks. The heat dissipation of the whole body of 8460p is very good and the test tells us that the temperature of keys area and the Palmrest area is below the human normal temperature. And the experience will not be affected even with a long time of use. As is known to all that the excellent design of heat dissipation can ensure a long hp battery life, and this is a rule in all the laptop. Because of the specific consumers of businessmen, the battery life will be more important when buyers choose a Notebook. HP EliteBook 8460 plaptop is equipped with 6 cells 55Wh lithium ion laptop battery. And it can last 321 minutes in full load according to the test. And if you keep a good habit and dim the screen, you can use the new Elitebook all day long.
Well we talk many advantages of the new 8460p above, but it actually has some defects. As with the appearance, the new one is more fashionable and exquisite. But as a whole, it lacks the serious business atmosphere and makes one feel exaggeration. And the traditional businessmen will be hard to accept the Chocolate Keyboard.
And further with the hardware configuration, the processor is excellent and can meet the needs of the complicated daily business with Core i5-2520M. But the graphics card is HD6470M, which is more for entertainment, instead of the more professional NVS series. Maybe it is a pity.
Just go to the Canada laptop battery online store http://www.thelaptopbattery.ca to get laptop battery including hp laptop battery.

10 Tips to Extend the Life of Your Data Centre

Is your data centre bursting at the seams and are you struggling to meet demand?
Most freely available advice typically focuses on carrying out worthwhile exercises including virtualisation, storage consolidation and platform refreshing to more efficient hardware. For large firms, these projects can become huge programmes of work, spanning many months or even years and are often left until the last minute, making the data centre manager's job even tougher.
Unfortunately, for the data centre itself there are no magic wand solutions and major changes to the core infrastructure are often unrealistic on cost, disruption or both.
So what can a data centre manager do to defer hanging the "no vacancies" sign on the door? Here are 10 tips to extend the life of your data centre:
  1. Audit, Audit, Audit - Make sure you know every last detail about your environment. Capture make and model details, power, connectivity and location for every asset deployed. Label and record everything, this detail is essential to help with...
  2. Installation planning - Pay close attention to where you are deploying equipment and try to balance power, cooling and network capacity as much as possible. Maintaining installation standards should stop "dead space" from appearing in your cabinets because of patching like a mangrove swamp.
  3. Money talks - Talking in kilowatts and BTU's wont cut it with the board, but telling them a £30k spend today will save £60k per annum probably will. Get energy consumption and unit costs to add something useful to your next conversation about PUE and remember, the FD is more likely to say yes to a sound business case.
  4. Seize power and keep your cool - Understand PDU and breaker utilisation and try to balance where possible. Make sure you can recite generator and UPS autonomy on demand and make sure management understand them, too. Get to know your CRAC and Chiller operation and ensure they are tuned for efficiency, this will mean there might be some capacity in reserve when you need it most. Record cabinet temperatures, manually if needed, to produce a heat-map for the data centre and show efficiencies.
  5. Know the pipeline - Get out and talk to your customers, ensure you are aware of projects being planned that will significantly impact capacity so you can start planning early. Host a regular meeting to review the pipeline and capture the data in a structured way
  6. Information is key - You may have an all singing, all dancing DCIM tool or a handful of spreadsheets, just make sure to use the tools you have religiously to capture data and...
  7. Keep people updated - Telling management one day they need £50m to build a new data centre because yours is nearly full is sure to get you fired, so issue a regular report that clearly shows current capacity and any constraints. Using your pipeline data to map known demand onto the current capacity and indicate the time-frame until capacity is reached will definitely not get you fired.
  8. Capacity is a two-way street - Manage decommissions as closely as installs and review decommission plans as part of the approval process for new capacity. Using your now accurate asset list, produce reports showing old (inefficient) hardware that might make good candidates for virtualisation or refresh.
  9. Keep current - Just because the paint is beginning to fade, don't write an ageing data centre off just yet. Keep abreast of current thinking and products to see if any give your facility a new lease of life. Improvements such as blanking, environmental monitoring or containment can make a huge difference and are often retrofit options.
  10. Start early - By far the most important advice we give is this: "Manage at capacity while you are empty". In other words, start to implement controls, standards, audits and other measures as soon as you can. In years to come, you will be glad you did.

Wear Leveling Gives Computer Media Storage a Long, Dependable Life

Wear Leveling Gives Computer Media Storage a Long, Dependable Life

Today, there have been many advances made to improve the quality of information technology service and design such as wear leveling. This type pf practice allows data processing to be accurately divided and appropriately inventoried. It can also reassign addresses to various blocks of data in an arranged state of memory. The main purpose of this re-map is to locate the place in which particular data can be processed. Typically, this is specifically part controller system.
It is important to remember that wear leveling is established in the solid-state memory that is not dependent on the main system. The main system's role is to support the logical block address exclusively. In that case, not all data undergoes change. To understand the core of this system and its expected durability, it can be helpful to simulate various inventory devices.
Most of these devices do not incorporate wear leveling. However, there are several models that are part of the solid-condition inventory innovation. They have the capacity to store data due to their 75% level of dimensions. Furthermore, they are also considered a very reliable inventory instrument that does not interchange or demonstrate other less than stable traits common with devices that have not been properly conditioned.
Some of them include operating system data and a number of executable files. In addition, there are also types of that are incorporated into different levels of systems. Most of them enable conventional distribution of files to a flash card that does not necessarily incorporate this system. Consequently, when the outer block drains out, the device can be difficult to manage, and this can in turn create complicated problems with storage capacity.
This will also apply to any instance where the block wears out. Even if only a minimal portion of the card was worn out. For that reason, the durability of the card is solely based on the kind of flash incorporated into each sector. Old-fashioned flash cards do not use any of the current methods that help prolong the life of any memory storage tool.
In that case, the cards that do not have wear-leveling are not ideal for any OEM applications. This is a significant matter since the capabilities of the controller affect the performance of any media programs being applied. Using this dynamic technique will improve the functionality of nearly any storage device. It is the perfect option to prolong and enhance numerous types of computer storage media.

Internet And USENET Memes

By
Memes are behind some of the most humorous Internet and USENET posts. They usually have origins that are as entertaining as the memes themselves.
A meme can be anything from a picture of a cat with a funny caption to a video that spawns millions of imitators. A great deal of the humor on the USENET and Internet originates with memes. Memes are some of the most do-it-yourself style comedy that you'll ever see. More often than not, they are also some of the funniest material that you'll ever see.
How it Starts
In many cases, a meme starts in a particular forum or USENET group. From there, the members of that group spread it out to people who do not belong to the group where it originated. Over time, the meme takes on a life of its own spreading from person to person almost like a virus. The meme will mutate, be re-adapted to fit different audiences and, oftentimes, be imitated over and over again, usually to great amusement on the part of the people who participate.
Photo Memes
The USENET system is not as well known for photographic memes as is the Internet, simply because the system is text based. However, there are photo memes that do get past round on the USENET system, as well. Most memes that involve photographs involve taking an image and captioning it with something humorous, whether that caption is directly related to what is going on in the photograph or not. Pictures of cats get a lot of play with this type of meme. In some cases, photographs are shown on sites that demonstrate an overarching meme common to them all and these photographs are not necessarily captioned, but left to stand on their own merits as examples of whatever meme is being forwarded by the site.
Text Memes
Text memes, written memes or other types of memes that don't rely on multimedia to propagate are much older and more common. They're also very common on the USENET system. Oftentimes, these memes are specific to a particular group of people. For example, the Backbone Cabal was a group of USENET experts who worked to improve the system in the 1980s until the 2000's. Because they weren't an official organization, they had something of a conspiratorial feel about them and a meme spawned around them. The meme was simple: TINC. It stood for "There is no Cabal" and it spread across USENET like wildfire.
There are all kinds of memes on the USENET system and on the Internet. Oftentimes, these provide ways for the members of subcultures to show their affiliation to one another. As an example of this, among USENET groups frequented by members of the Gothic subculture, threatening to revoke or pull someone's "Goth card" was a way of indicating that something they said or did was contrary to the characteristic aesthetics or behaviors of members of that subculture.
Keep an eye out for memes. They can be a lot of fun and, in many cases, they evolve in ways that are fascinating.

Getting Professional Help
If you've depleted all available options to you, and you think you might need some added help to solve a computer problem, then trying to get professional advice might help. Professional advice is available in a number of forms, nevertheless the 2 major forms are: computer repair shops, and professional call outs.
The majority of folks choose to take the computer into a computer repair shop. They're typically located in a convenient spot in a local community, having the ability to solve a number of computer issues that men and women may present to them.
A tech could also come to your house or work to solve the problem. Such a service may tend to be slightly more expensive than going directly to computer repair shop, nevertheless, it really is much more convenient and enables you to get more tasks done any time your computer is being repaired.

Repair or replacement?

Will you be able to get convenient on-call help? Finally, does the computer repair shop, or professional assisting you, have adequate qualifications which you're happy with?
All of these inquiries outlined, really should help to put you on the right track when the search for a computer repair finally takes place. Even if your computer doesn't have to have repaired immediately, it is always a good idea to make a list of would-be professionals or computer repair shops which you might need to depend on sooner or later. Android Home Project - Control House Lights With Android

By
The Web search engine giant Google Inc., is more 'intruding' into a world out of the Web. The company has now prepared an energy efficient Google LED bulb that you can turn on and off with an Android smartphone or an Android touchpad. The Google bulb is proposed to save energy as least as possible. Once the control of lighting of your home comes in your hand, you can instantly manage it and save energy even a bit. Google has worked in association with Lighting Science Group to realize this amazing Android smartphone controllable LED lamp.
The intelligent Google bulb works with a computer chip, which helps you control the lighting of your home. Most of Android smartphones from companies like Samsung, HTC, Acer, LG, Sony Ericsson, and many other will be compatible with the feature. An application on your handset will help you control the lightning. You can just touch on, off or on buttons to control your bed room's bulbs now.
Does it sound great?
The Google LED bulb is also equipped with GPS system and proximity sensors. It will automatically turn off and on your room's bulbs when you get in and out of the rooms. The feature will save your time and the energy as well in a fantastic way. Even a single second's sparing of energy can be saved with the technology. Moreover, it is an LED bulb that itself consumes less energy than the CFLs.
Google LED bulb can noticeably replace all other innovative bulb controlling methods. You may remember the Clapper of 80s. It was a wonderful technology that you can just control the lights and stereo on claps. But the technology failed as it responded to your coughs and your dog's barking near to your windows. The new Google LED bulb won't have any such deficiencies, because it is made up using the most advanced technologies like proximity sensors and GPS.
In fact, Google LED bulb is part of that Android @Home project that is expected to bring several services under the control of Android smartphones and tablets. The project is also to offer a step light, security lamp and a light switch in near future. Google's decision to revolutionize home automation is a clear indication of the Web giant's plan not to confine itself in Web services only.
More home automation products are anticipated to come out of Google's labs in the coming months and years. Your Android smartphone and tablet will eventually turn as an ultimate controller of many incredible activities other than for just making calls, surfing the Web and watching films. You will be simply able to manage lightning, security, stereo and TVs of your household with your valuable Android products. We can't wait for such a world that Google is trying to realize in coming years.

NVIDIA's New Processor, Tegra 3

By
New Processor from NVIDIA
NVIDIA has come up with a new processor based on System-On-Chip technology specially designed for smartphones tablets and other hand held devices. The new NVIDIA tegra 3 is given the codename "Kal El". NVIDIA said the processor would be quad-core in the beginning stages but they denied revealing any of the finer details of the processor. A couple of days back NVIDIA published white papers pertaining to the architecture of the processor. The papers reveal that the processor actually has a fifth core running parallel with the other four cores. The secret fifth core is called "companion core". All the five processor are ARM Cortex A9 processors and can be separately activated or deactivated based on work load. NVIDIA designed a special circuitry called Tegra 3 logic controller to do this task.
Technology in tegra 3
In the paper NVIDIA mentions that the new processor, Tegra 3 is going to work on Variable Symmetric Multiprocessing (vSMP). vSMP technology can be used for optimising the CPU in multi-threading scenario and also introduce multi-tasking functions for efficient performance and better power utilisation. The companion core ie., the fifth secret core is built transparent to the OS which means that the OS and the applications running will not be aware if the fifth core but can take advantage of it during run time.
More on companion core
The operating frequency of companion core is limited to 500MHz while all other four main cores are left to function at their full throttle of 1.5GHz. The companion core is mainly meant for less demanding applications that run in the background like animated background, twitter app, Facebook, push mail service, background apps etc. Thus the architecture leaves the four main cores to do their work at full potential for maximum results while doing system heavy tasks like gaming, video editing, image processing etc.
Test results of Tegra 3 performance
The new technology has been shown to perform more efficiently with less power consumption than Tegra 2. Results show that Tegra 3 utilises 61% less power during video play and 34% less during gaming functions. NVIDIA expects the new Tegra 3 to astonish smartphone and tablet manufacturers with its incredible performance. ZTE T98 is the first tablet which is running on NVIDIA Tegra 3 and is is produced by a Chinese company ZTE. The tablet with 7-inch screen would run android 3.2 HoneyComb.
I am Arun Thomas. I am interested in blogging about technology. NVIDIA Tegra 3 could be a mega hit when it comes to smartphones and tablets. The secret fifth core called the companion core is going to play the key feature in the processor. The release date of ZTE T98 which runs on NVIDIA Tegra 3 is not yet out.

The New Concept Of Internet Ready TV

By
World-wide-web capable TVs are just now hitting the industry and creating a name for themselves. They haven't become popular yet, but stats show that after some time people will find them much more appealing.
Considering the fact that internet ready TV is fairly new, the capacity to surf the web from your T.V isn't quite yet achievable. The majority of products limit consumers to a specific number of pages this puts restrictions on what a user can watch. Having the ability to get connected to the web with out being forced to add additional wires and cables or a Laptop or computer to do so, is really a step up in the technology world. Less is becoming more in the delivery of the digital realm on your Television.
Which manufacturers offer internet ready TV?
To most consumer's surprise Internet ready TV is offered by a lot of different brands. Sony, Samsung and Bravia have hopped on board with the notion, in addition to Panasonic, Sharp and LG. It's not tough to find a TV today which is offering this feature. Most TV's are aiming more towards the video on demand, YouTube aspect of things. Permitting customers to view the films they would view on their laptop or computer right from their TV sets.
However lots of content providing providers have yet to jump on board with the idea. So there are not many web sites among the viewing list. For the time being it seems, online ready TV's are more aimed towards the capability to just watch content on line rather than interacting and browsing on it.
The two most popular Internet TV's
Sony offers a 32" Web capable TV which is powered by Google. It enables users to view specific content from the web. For around $500 you can have a full powered, ready to go online tv. It comes with a handheld keyboard which allows you to not just watch TV but surf the internet when you do it
Samsung has taken a different approach which gives a new world of entertainment with regards to online capable Tv. It consists of a smart hub which enables you to go through the internet programs supplied, so there's no looking for content. It is possible to search the net with it's stand-alone web browser. Plus it comes with a video suggestion generator.
Given that this concept is fairly new, individuals are still trying to grab hold of the idea. However Internet Ready TV is a developing concept with huge possibilities and more and more brands are introducing internet TV's to their range each day.

Top 5 Reasons Why Google Will Never Fail

Recently I came across an article on Internet that explained the reasons why Google would fail in the future. After reading it, it dawned to me that there is so much about Google which people are missing. So I decided to put pen to paper or more literally, fingers to keyboard, and let people know that why Google Inc. will never collapse.
Here are the top 5 reasons why Google will rule the world in the future.
5. Jack of all trades, and master of All!
Google is perhaps the only corporation that is competing and providing its services in almost every sector of the computer industry. Starting from humble beginnings of birth at a dorm-room at Stanford, Google is now providing solutions ranging from its basic Search Engine to Smartphone solutions to Social Networking and Cloud computing.
4. Chrome OS.
You can call it a browser on steroids, but you cannot deny the importance and demand of an Open Source OS that is more flexible and variable than the rigid old Windows. With its app store providing applications for almost everything, it is far easier, convenient and cheap to download and enjoy the apps you need.
3. Smart move for Smartphones.
Although Google already stepped up into the Smartphone industry with the launch of Nexus One and Nexus S, but with the biggest move ever made by purchasing Motorola Mobility for 12.5Bn $s, Google has dived right into the Smartphone industry. Android holds 43% of the market shares in Smartphone operating systems in 2011, it will rise explosively when Google starts launching Smartphones as a move to counter the iPhone fever. Android is already the world's most used Smartphone platform, powering over 190 million devices.
2. The Social Society.
After Orkut died mainly because of its privacy concerns and the launch of Facebook (which provided better privacy at that time), Google has learned a lot, which they surely exhibited in the G+. If you were expecting to see that Facebook draining completely on the next day of the launch of G+, you were very naïve, my friend. Even Facebook took years to break away users from Orkut. And Facebook might lose its member-base because of the same reasons as Orkut. Facebook has been introducing too much "reforms" in a very small extent of time, and also killing privacy of its users at many places. These new "reforms" might turn destructive against Facebook in the long run. G+ will surely emerge triumphant.
1. Surfing the Cloud.
Google might be the only one who has blurred the lines between cloud computing and desktop computing. With the launching of its powerful Chromebooks, which are being classified as a new generation of "Net-tops", Google is probably the first player to enter this promising field. Google recently bought over around 1023 of IBM patents in a broad range of areas, including SEO, relational databases, Object Oriented programming, servers, routers and fabrication and architecture of memory and Microprocessing chips. This maybe a new addition in their arsenal to fight the patent wars and can also be a hint for something huge.
Some last words for people who challenge the credibility of Google: The phrase is "Google It". 'Nuff said.

Buy Brand New or Refurbished? Thoughts on Buying Electronics

By
In the world of electronics there is much thought about brand new verses refurbished. Some people feel that the only way to buy an electronic item is to purchase brand new and buy 2 and 3 year extended service plans. I would like to offer here thoughts for buying at an extreme opposite approach. For years, the American culture pressurized me for every electronic purchase I ever made: Buy new only! Buy all the service plans you are offered, and buy it now! I think what alerted me to change my thinking mostly was how highly pressurized the sales tactics were to get me to do this. And since I'm a 'bottom line' type person, I began going against the flow.
Slowly, I personally began changing my buying habits--these new devices offer 1 to 2 year warranties so I'll forgo the extra warranty--or at least the extended warranty. An instant $30 to $100 savings on every item. Wow, now that's significant. Then I thought, hmm, lets try these rerfurbs that are out there.
When receiving the refurbs I marveled how they looked brand new! Shrink wrapped, brand new outer casings, and fired up like new. I only accepted the free 90-Day Warranty when buying them.
Of all of the items I've bought refurbished, only one item thus far has had to be returned -- and it was the only one out of 100's that the particular store had to replace--and they did graciously, even though it was weeks past the warranty date.
So here is my thesis here; with monies being so tight and that leaves us sometimes wondering where the next few hundred dollars are going to come in to pay the mortgage over cover fuel for the car, we must make wise decisions with our purchases. You may say, it is wise to buy top notch and cover with insurance. But a wise, elder man said to me once while in my early 20's-- "Sister, you can be insurance poor."
Having done the research on myself, this is my conclusion. Many electronics can be bought as re-manufactured--with the 90 Day warranty...saving 100's of dollars even on one single purchase. If the item is faulty, it most likely will show up in that initial period. Companies are more than willing to replace a refurb. Don't bother with all of the warranties--many of these items will be obsolete in just a few years anyways and you will want to upgrade. Then sell your used item on eBay (eBayers LOVE used items for a great deal) and use that money to help upgrade for another very inexpensive refurb.
Dare to try the research project on yourself and immediately put that money back into your budget -- Hey, get a better car instead! Go on a much needed vacation, or at least -- pay that Mortgage on time!!!
Visit my store at http://www.mypicksforyou.net and enjoy a huge selection of new and refurbished name brand electronics already slashed from retail prices. I offer amazing quality customer service, and better yet, if your refurb is faulty, I'll get you a working one or your money will be returned.
I hope this article helps you to save money.

The Difference Between Accuracy and Precision in Estimating Story Points

By
When first starting out in Agile, a lot of developers (and especially management) naturally try to find a relationship between story points and hours or days. Story points are an estimate of how long something will take, but it is abstracted as a relative relationship. Although there is a relationship between story points and hours or days, that relationship varies by scrum team. Trying to get your team to go through the paradigm shift can be challenging, especially for project managers who are trying to transition to Scrum. This challenge comes down to the difference between accuracy and precision. In case you're not sure, here's a quick example to help illustrate the difference:
For the first part of this example, take a medium-size cup from the break room or any fast food restaurant. Hold it up for all to see, then set it on the table. Do not let them touch the cup. Tell them, "Without discussing with your peers, write down exactly how tall the cup is in inches."
Next, ask them to write down the length of the circumference (around the edge) of the lip of the cup, also in inches. As they are writing down these numbers, note how long it takes them to come up with a value.
Once everyone is done, ask each member for the values they wrote down. Write each one on a whiteboard (or use sticky notes). For fun, ask why there are so many different values and whose estimate they would be willing to commit to.
For the next part, ask them to repeat the exercise; except this time they must use relative estimation. To mix things up, pull out a can of Coke (or a different size cup).
Ask the team, "Relatively speaking, how much larger is the circumference of the lip of the can to the height of the can?" Give them four choices:
A. About the same size
B. About 1.5 times larger
C. About twice as large
D. About 4 times larger
Note: It doesn't matter how tall the can or cup is for them to give an estimate. Also, notice how much faster they can complete the exercise and how much more they are willing to commit to an answer.
I like this example because it forces people to think about similar things (length) in an unusual way (height vs. circumference). Trying to visualize and calculate the circumference is difficult for many people to do in their head. This is similar to the difficulty team members go through when trying to compare two different stories.
To precisely estimate the amount of time it takes to design, code, and test some functionality of an application is complicated, often wrong, and can be a large waste of time. This is because people in general tend to be better at relative sizing, as opposed to absolute sizing. Being able to use relative sizing is one of the biggest advantages of using story points over time (hours or days).
In conclusion, we are accurate when we say the circumference of the lip of cup is about two times larger than the height (and the circumference of the lip of the can is about 1.5 times larger than the height); however, we are not precise. Similarly, we are accurate when we size Story A as a 2, or two-and-a-half times smaller than Story B (a size 5). We don't need to know how long it will take to do Story A or Story B. We just need to know that Story B is about two-and-a-half times more (time, risk, effort, and complexity) than Story A.
